Pan American Expedition | part 4

Santiago - Ushuaia

Join us on an unforgettable journey from Santiago, Chile to Ushuaia, Argentina, where every day brings new landscapes, cultures, and adventures. This expedition is designed for those who love freedom on the road, spectacular scenery, and the chance to be as active (or as relaxed) as you like. With your 4×4 as your home on wheels, you’ll travel in comfort while exploring some of the most beautiful and diverse regions of South America.

the route

From Santiago, we head south through the Chilean Andes, passing charming towns and villages. Along the route, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for hiking and, for the thrill-seekers, rafting on one of the world’s most renowned whitewater rivers.

We’ll explore some of the continent’s most iconic national parks. In Parque Villarrica, we’ll pay a visit to the hanging glacier, while Parque Pumalín Douglas impresses with its pristine forests and dramatic landscapes. We visit the Perito Moreno glacier, a breathtaking marvel of ice, and drive through the awe-inspiring Torres del Paine, which we personally consider one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. And that’s saying something, because we’ve seen a lot during our expeditions.

As we cross into Argentina and Patagonia, the contrasts are unforgettable: towering Andean peaks, expansive Pampas plains, crystal-clear lakes, and spectacular glaciers. Wildlife is never far away! Keep your eyes open for penguins along the coast and other iconic species that make this region so special.

We’ll traverse some of the world’s most scenic roads, including the Carretera Austral and Ruta 40, making our way to Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost tip of the continent. Here, rugged coastline, sweeping vistas, and rich history set the stage for this final leg of the expedition. Finally, we reach Ushuaia, the “end of the world,” where views of the Beagle Channel and surrounding mountains await.

Sneak Peek

This video isn’t from this exact expedition, but from one of our earlier South American car journeys. It gives a taste of the landscapes, activities, and experiences you can expect.

We often travel with a videographer on our truck expeditions, so you’ll find more videos from those trips. This journey covers a route similar to Part 4 of the Pan American Expedition, but with cars instead of trucks.

Take the wheel without owning a 4×4

Rent one of our fully equipped cars

For this stage of the expedition, you don’t need your own vehicle. Rent one of our fully equipped 4×4’s (a Toyota Double Cab pickup or a Land Cruiser 78) perfect for two or four travellers. All vehicles are under five years old and prepared by Overland Travel for self-sufficient adventure travel.

Each car is ready for the road with: a fridge, air compressor, rooftop tent(s) with sleeping gear, Starlink satellite connection (subscription included), VHF radio, Garmin navigation, long-range fuel tank, essential tools, recovery equipment, and spare parts. Everything you need for an independent and comfortable expedition is included. Just bring yourself and your sense of adventure.

Want to keep the car after the expedition? You can choose to buy it at a reduced rate once the expedition ends.
