From here, we turn inland and start crossing Colombia. A country known for its diversity, hospitality and dramatic scenery. The road takes us through the green hills of Colombia\u2019s <strong data-start=\"1406\" data-end=\"1423\">coffee region<\/strong>, where plantations cling to steep slopes and small villages invite us to slow down and soak up local life. In <strong data-start=\"1534\" data-end=\"1546\">Medell\u00edn<\/strong>, we see firsthand how a city with a complicated past has transformed itself into one of South America\u2019s most dynamic cultural hubs.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1680\" data-end=\"1904\">In <strong data-start=\"1729\" data-end=\"1744\">San Agust\u00edn<\/strong>, we explore one of the most important archaeological sites on the continent, home to mysterious stone statues carved long before the Inca Empire rose to power. Then the scenery changes again. The mountains give way to lush lowlands as we head toward the <strong data-start=\"2000\" data-end=\"2016\">Amazon basin<\/strong>. Here, the air is thick with life: dense jungle, winding rivers, and an orchestra of birds and insects that never seems to stop. It\u2019s a completely different world, and a reminder of just how vast and varied this continent really is.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2257\" data-end=\"2283\">Climbing into the Andes<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2285\" data-end=\"2624\">As we leave the jungle behind, the Andes slowly rise in front of us. Snow-capped peaks, deep valleys and high mountain passes define the next stage of the expedition. We take our time here, ascending gradually and allowing our bodies to adjust to the altitude. This isn\u2019t a race, it\u2019s about enjoying the journey and traveling comfortably.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2626\" data-end=\"2852\">Crossing the <strong data-start=\"2639\" data-end=\"2650\">equator<\/strong> marks another milestone as we enter the southern hemisphere and roll into <strong data-start=\"2725\" data-end=\"2733\">Peru<\/strong>. Expect dramatic mountain scenery, grazing alpacas, and a food culture that\u2019s considered one of the best in the world.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2859\" data-end=\"2900\">The grand finale: Cusco &amp; Machu Picchu<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2902\" data-end=\"3179\">Our expedition ends in <strong data-start=\"2925\" data-end=\"2934\">Cusco<\/strong>, the former capital of the Inca Empire, sitting at 3,400 meters above sea level. Cobblestone streets, lively markets and layers of history make this city a destination in its own right.
